We are delighted to announce that Merrill Johns was elected as Honorary President of Dover & Deal Liberal Democrats at our first AGM which took place on Saturday 14 November 2020.
Merrill was born in Wales, but after university left Wales to take up her first teaching post in Sudbury, Suffolk. At 24, she married Godfrey Johns, a Methodist minister, travelling widely including a period in the Bahamas.
In 1972 her family moved to Deal with their three children and she has remained in the Constituency ever since.
Merrill was introduced to the local Liberal Democrat party through a door to door canvasser in the lead up to the February 1974 election. She became a member, a committee member, a PPC (Prospective Parliamentary Candidate) and Chair. While Chair her late husband, then retired, became Treasurer.
Merrill says: "In all these years my loyalty to the Party has never wavered. I take this new position of Honorary President with pride, as ever looking forward with Hope."
